Winter Skincare Tips

As the seasons change and the weather gets colder, our skin can become drier. To tackle this it is important to review your current routine to ensure your skin has the adequate hydration it needs during the colder period.

Firstly it’s important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water.

When it’s cold outside we often forget to drink enough water throughout the day, but this is in fact key because low humidity is most likely to strip our skin of its moisture. Additionally, central heating dries the air, which in turn can dry the skin. Keep rooms at a lower temperature and wear additional layers. You’ll save on fuel bills too!

Secondly, Keep up a consistent routine suitable for your skin type; Use a cleanser to get rid of built-up dirt, impurities and pollutants both morning and evening.

Consider chemical exfoliants

The physical exfoliants that are a popular choice during the summer months can be too harsh for winter, leaving delicate skin exposed to a more challenging environment. If your skin is a more tolerant skin type and not easily reactive follow your cleanser with a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, it will also stimulate your skin to regenerate new healthy skin cells. These gentle exfoliants are far better alternatives in the winter months than scrubs which can damage skin and cause further moisture loss and more dryness.

For all skin types it is important to include a moisturiser in your routine, if you are using actives such as BHA’s like salicylic acid or retinoids and they are causing skin to feel dry, apply a thin layer of moisturiser first before applying your actives. It is best to opt for moisturisers in the winter months that contain ceramides to help strengthen he skin barrier and retain moisture and that are non comedogenic.

Sun Protection Matters

Remember that UV rays are harmful all year round, especially when reflected on snowy surfaces, so never leave home without applying your sunscreen. Always opt for a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

 Use tepid water

Although it’s tempting to warm up with a hot wash, hotter water can dry the skin, stripping it of natural oils. Keep water tepid for best results.

Use cleansers, not soap

A richer, cream-based cleanser is ideal for dry skin whilst oilier and combination skin can benefit from a water-soluble cleanser. Avoid products which are harsh or abrasive.

Serum nourishes the skin

Perfect for providing skin cells with beneficial vitamins and antioxidants the right serum is a great way of dealing with individual skin problems. A hydrating serum works very  well on dry and combination skin types; oilier skins benefit from a serum that hydrates at the same time as lowering sebum production.

Winter Skin Care Made Simple

Taking care of your skin during winter doesn’t have to be complicated. By staying hydrated, adjusting your routine, and using the right products for your skin type, you can protect your skin from dryness and irritation while maintaining a radiant, healthy glow.

Small changes in your daily habits can make a big difference, leaving your skin feeling nourished and refreshed all season long.
