Does My Skincare Routine Need to Change?

Finding the optimal skincare products for your skin always feels like such a win. And when it ain’t broke, why fix it? But there are times when our skin is trying to tell us it’s time for a change up, which can be determined by several different factors.

These are….

You’ve stopped seeing results from your products

If you’ve noticed breakouts recently (despite including a sebum-balancing and anti-breakout product in your routine), it could be that your hormones have shifted, causing an increase in sebum or breakdown with your skin barrier.

We recommend booking in for a consultation with a certified skin doctor (like us here at Skinora!) so we can assess what might be going wrong with your product usage. The benefit of speaking to a medical professional with skincare expertise means they will be able to find any possible underlying link with your skin from a clinical point of view (saving you a lot of time and energy investigating).

You’ve newly been diagnosed with a skin condition

Few studies have looked into the link between skin aging and skin diseases, though one such study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that 76% of participants have at least one skin disease that required follow-up treatment. Such conditions included Rosaca (found in 25% of participants) and Asteatotic eczema – dry and itchy skin (found in 21% of participants).

Studies such as these prove that loss of collagen, oil and lipids within the skin can give rise to skin conditions that demand daily preventive attention. These changes begin as early as our early 30s, so it’s important to shake up your skincare routine if you’ve recently noticed unusual symptoms or been diagnosed with a skin condition.

Your collagen levels have started to decline

Collagen levels drop off by approximately 1 – 1.5% a year after the age of 30, which will inevitably make a difference to the products you need to use as your skin ages.

Make sure you use ceramide and hyaluronic-rich moisturisers and serums that will deal with collagen loss, and draw essential moisture to your skin as you get into your late 30s and early 40s.

The season changed

Everyone should reevaluate their skincare routine when a change of season comes around, especially if you live in a climate with extreme weathers.

Swap out lighter moisturisers for heavier creams, and use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin which stop your rejuvenating products from soothing skin during the colder months.

Remember though, one thing that should always be a constant all year round is SPF!

Tips for changing your skincare routine

  • Don’t change all your products at once – phase them out if you think a certain product might be responsible for irritation or sensitivity.
  • Make sure you identify the right % of each antioxidant ingredient in your new skincare products – or you might be on the end of a nasty adverse reaction (this is particularly applicable to retinol).
  • Book a skincare consultation with Dr Anna to identify any possible allergies or reactions to the current ingredients in your skincare products.
